FAQ - Frequently asked questions about ISO certification and CE marking
ISO 9001 Quality Management
ISO 9001:2015 sets the requirement of a quality management system. It can be adopted by all businesses, small or big, irrespective of business sector.
ISO 9001 certification is recognized globally. At least one million businesses, originating from 170 countries are currently certified.
It is a management tool, through which, objectives are set, monitored and improved.
The international standard ISO 9001 calls for business context awareness and focuses on customer satisfaction, business risk management and internal improvement.
The purpose of ISO 9001 is the uninterrupted provision of quality products and services to the customer, while at the same time, meeting the needs and expectations of all other interested parties.
ISO 14001 Environmental Management
ISO 14001:2015 sets the requirements of an environmental management system which can be adopted by businesses of all kinds.
At least 300,000 businesses, originating from 171 countries are currently certified to ISO 14001.
The international standard calls for the integration of the environmental management system into the core business context processes.
Through the life cycle approach to products and services, ISO 14001 helps businesses apply environmental legislation more effectively and demonstrate their commitment to environmental protection, also in the context of modern ESG requirements.
One step further, ISO 50001 Energy Management, aims to improve the energy performance of businesses, something that often has positive environmental impact too.
ISO 45001 Occupational Health, Safety
ISO 45001:2018 sets the minimum requirements of a complete Health and Safety at Work (HSE) Management System.
The international standard enables the effective design, application and support of business processes and controls, so that the work environment ocnditions conform to internationally recognized practices.
The implementation of ISO 45001 is also linked to the social pillar of ESG, as it documents the responsible management of health, safety and working conditions.
Through the implementation of ISO 45001, occupational risks and hazards are identified and controlled through preventive measures. Reduction of accidents and illnesses brings reduced business operating costs and work environment mprovements through HSE motivation practices
In addition, ISO 39001 regarding Road Safety is often adopted by businesses and organizations primarily involved in road transport operations.
ISO 22000 Food Safety Management
ISO 22000:2018 is about food safety management. It can be adopted by small or large businesses positioned anywhere in the food chain.
For example, certification is applicable to catering services, food industries, food retail, food packaging and contact materials, transportation and storage companies, etc.
The international standard sets requirements in order to achieve control of probable or improbable food hazards (HACCP), so that safer food is provided to consumers.
Extending on the requirements of ISO 22000, the FSSC 22000 standard is recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), which can be seen as an advantage for food exporting businesses
ISO 27001 Information Security
ISO 27001:2022 lays down the requirements of an information security management system which primarily applies to businesses in which confidentiality, integrity and availability is of dominant importance.
All types of information come under the scope of ISO 27001, whether they are stored electronically or in physical form.
The standard also covers, to a significant extent, the technical security requirements of Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR) and strengthens information governance, an area also linked to ESG.
ISO 27001 provides a framework through which businesses address the requirements of interested parties, identify and analyze threats, implement security mechanisms, and monitor their effectiveness thereafter.
The ISO 27701:2019 standard extends ISO 27001 requirements and focuses on privacy information management, offering an improved GDPR compliance framework.
In addition, ISO 27017 covers the security of cloud services, while ISO 27018 focuses on the protection of personal data in public cloud environments.
ISO 14064 Greenhouse Gases (GHG)
ISO 14064 is an international standard for the quantification, reporting, and verification of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It applies to organizations seeking environmental transparency, sustainability, and compliance.
The standard consists of three parts:
ISO 14064-1 for the calculation and reporting of emissions at the organizational level.
ISO 14064-2 for emission reduction projects.
ISO 14064-3 for the verification and validation of reported data.
ISO 14064 enhances the credibility of environmental reporting and helps businesses document their climate and ESG actions with measurable data.
Adopting ISO 14064 facilitates compliance with National, European, and international climate-related policies and obligations, such as the Greek Climate Law 4936/2022.
At the same time, it helps organisations meet sustainability requirements from stakeholders, markets and regulatory frameworks by providing measurable and verifiable data on emissions and emission reduction actions.
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR) primarily aims to protect personal data and is applicable to almost all organisations active in the E.U. regardless of where in the world they are established.
Protection is enacted through rules relevant to processing and movement of such data.
The main GDPR principles behind personal data processing are lawfulness, fairness and transparency, purpose limitation, data minimisation, accuracy, storage limitation, integrity and confidentiality, and accountability.

Product Labelling
Commonly observed symbols displayed on products and their packaging, arise through extensive legislative work which often requires simple labelling procedures, but sometimes the related requirements are complex, costly and time-consuming.
The criteria and prerequisites are country specific but European Member states usually agree on common ground.
Although product labelling procedures usually apply to the actual product manufacturer, also importers/distributors can be involved if importing unlabelled products into the European Economic Area.
Our team members have the knowledge and experience required in order to dictate the appropriate labelling scheme for any product.
CE Marking
CE marking implies that a product is in conformity with E.U. legislation and it can be freely traded between the member states of the European Economic Area.
CE marking is mandatory only for some product groups falling into specific European directives, called New Approach Directives.
CE marking procedures usually require an assessment of the product or its manufacturing process prior to market placing.
This assessment often involves the intervention of a notified body/laboratory. The degree of involvement depends on the health, safety and environmental impact of the product.
UKCA Marking
UKCA marking replaced CE marking in the United Kingdom from 01/01/2022 onwards.
Many products are UKCA marked by utilizing identical procedures to those of CE marking.
Different procedures are in place for medical devices, construction products, civil explosives, marine equipment, pressure equipment and rail products.
Environmental Product Declaration(EPD)
The Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a comprehensive assessment of the environmental impact of a product throughout its life cycle.
It provides information about the environmental footprint of the product, from extraction of its raw materials until their final disposal, in accordance with the international standards ISO 14025 and EN 15804.
The Environmental Declaration EPD is independently verified, which makes it a reliable and valid source of information about the environmental performance of the product.
In modern constructions which often adopt green standards such as LEED, BREEAM, etc, products carriying an Environmental Declaration EPD are prefferable and offer a competitive advantage.
Energy Class
Energy labelling of some appliances makes it easier for consumers to compare the energy effectiveness of products of different manufacturers, by utilizing common objective criteria.
Such criteria can be energy consumption, noise emissions, homogenized technical specifications, etc.
The directive classifies the appliances into energy classes (A++, A+, B, D, etc.). Its applicability is mandatory and closely interconnected to the CE marking directives.
The energy efficiency calculations and the categorization into energy classes in general, is achieved via documented testing, measurements, algebraic calculation, etc.
Special Product Labelling
Large number of markings and symbols can be found on products and their packaging worldwide.
Our team members have the necessary knowledge required in order to guide you through the corresponding labelling schemes and their requirements.
For example, the glass-fork icon: ![]()
Food contact materials, such as plastic, glass, ceramics, paper and metals ought to be suitable for use and their suitability ought to be evident. The labelling prerequisites differ between material types.
Corporate Sustainability - ESG
Corporate Sustainability describes the way in which a business operates with a long-term perspective, taking into account not only its financial performance, but also its impact on the environment, people and the way it is governed.
ESG is one of the key frameworks for recording and assessing corporate sustainability. The initials ESG stand for Environmental, Social and Governance.
The environmental pillar examines issues such as energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, the use of natural resources, waste and the climate impact of the business.
The social pillar includes issues such as working conditions, health and safety, human rights, diversity, responsible supply chain management and the relationship of the business with employees, customers and other stakeholders.
The governance pillar examines business ethics, transparency, regulatory compliance, anti-corruption, risk management and the existence of appropriate policies and procedures.
Through recognised platforms and frameworks such as EcoVadis, Sedex/SMETA, Synesgy, AA1000, GRI, ESRS, CSRD and CDP, businesses can record, assess and disclose their ESG performance in a structured and comparable way.
